Hernia
Hernia: Symptoms and When Surgery Becomes Necessary
A hernia is a bulge that appears when an organ pushes through a weak spot in the muscle wall. It won't close on its own — but knowing the signs helps you treat it safely before it becomes an emergency.
Common symptoms
- A visible bulge in the groin or belly, often clearer when standing or coughing.
- Discomfort or dragging pain, worse with lifting or straining.
- The bulge may disappear on lying down (early stage).
Important: a hernia never heals by itself. The only permanent solution is surgical repair — and it's far safer done early than as an emergency.
Warning signs — go urgently
- The bulge becomes hard, painful and cannot be pushed back.
- Vomiting, severe pain, redness over the bulge.
These can mean the hernia is trapped (strangulated) — a surgical emergency.
What does repair involve?
Most hernias are repaired with a mesh, often by laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery — smaller cuts, less pain, quick recovery, and a very low chance of the hernia returning when done well. Many patients go home the same day or the next.
