Rectal prolapse is when part of the rectum (the last part of the large intestine) slips down and comes out through the anus. It can cause discomfort, mucus, bleeding and difficulty controlling motion. Surgery gives the most lasting correction.
Through small cuts, the rectum is lifted and fixed back in its correct position. Less pain, smaller scars and good long-term control.
In selected patients, the prolapse is corrected through the anal area — useful for older or higher-risk patients.
Diet, fibre and habit advice are combined with surgery to keep results lasting.
Recovery depends on the method, but keyhole surgery usually means a short stay, early walking and a gradual return to normal routine with bowel-habit guidance.
