Gas Pain or Appendix Pain? How to Tell the Difference

By Dr. Bhupendraa PrrasadBombay Hospital, IndoreReviewed Sep 20263 min read

Stomach pain is common, and most of it is gas, indigestion or a passing bug. But appendicitis starts with similar vague pain — and missing it can be serious. Knowing how the two usually behave helps you decide when to wait and when to go to hospital.

Quick answer: gas pain tends to move around, comes in waves, and eases after passing gas or stool. Appendix pain usually starts around the navel, shifts to the lower right side within hours, steadily gets worse, hurts more on walking, coughing or bumps, and often comes with loss of appetite, nausea or fever. Worsening right-sided pain over 6–12 hours needs a doctor.

Early appendix pain can feel vague, but it typically becomes constant and worsens over hours rather than coming and going over days.
Which side is appendix pain on?+
Usually the lower right side of the abdomen, though it may start around the navel and can be in unusual places in pregnancy or children.
