Diet After Piles Surgery: Indian Foods to Eat and Avoid

By Dr. Bhupendraa PrrasadBombay Hospital, IndoreReviewed Sep 20263 min read

After piles, fissure or fistula treatment, the single most important thing you control is your stool. Soft, regular stools mean less pain, faster healing and fewer chances of the problem coming back. The good news: a normal Indian home kitchen already has everything you need.

Quick answer: eat fibre-rich foods (whole wheat, daliya, dal, vegetables, fruits like papaya and guava), drink 2.5–3 litres of water daily unless restricted, and avoid maida, fried and very spicy food, excess tea/coffee and alcohol for the first few weeks.

Foods to eat

  • Whole grains: whole-wheat roti with chokar, daliya, oats, brown or regular rice with dal.
  • Dal and pulses: moong dal, masoor, rajma and chana in moderation.
  • Vegetables: lauki, tori, palak, methi, carrot, beans, pumpkin, cucumber salad.
  • Fruits: ripe papaya, guava, pear, apple with skin, orange, banana (ripe), figs (anjeer) and soaked raisins.
  • Liquids: water, buttermilk (chaas), coconut water, lemon water, clear soups.
  • Isabgol (psyllium husk) if advised — usually 1–2 teaspoons in water or milk at night with plenty of water.

Foods to avoid for a few weeks

  • Maida items: white bread, pav, samosa, kachori, noodles, bakery biscuits.
  • Deep-fried and very spicy food, heavy red chilli and pickles.
  • Excess tea and coffee (dehydrate you) and alcohol.
  • Too much cheese, paneer and red meat with no vegetables.
  • Packaged snacks and fast food.

Sample day's menu

TimeMeal
Early morning1–2 glasses of warm water; 4–5 soaked raisins or 2 soaked figs
BreakfastVegetable daliya or poha with peas, or 2 whole-wheat rotis with sabzi
Mid-morningPapaya or guava; a glass of water
LunchRoti, dal, green sabzi, salad, a bowl of curd or chaas
EveningFruit or roasted chana; lemon water or coconut water
Dinner (light, early)Khichdi with vegetables, or roti with lauki/tori sabzi
BedtimeIsabgol in water/milk if prescribed
Increase fibre gradually over a week and drink extra water with it. Suddenly adding lots of fibre without water can cause gas and harder stools.

Is spicy food really the cause of piles?

Spicy food does not cause piles by itself, but it can increase burning and irritation — especially after surgery or with a fissure. The bigger culprits are constipation, low fibre and straining. See piles myths explained.
