10 Common Myths About Piles (Bawaseer) — and the Facts

By Dr. Bhupendraa PrrasadBombay Hospital, IndoreReviewed Sep 20263 min read

Few health problems attract as many home theories as piles. Some myths are harmless; others delay proper treatment for years. Here are the ten we hear most often in the OPD, with the facts.

Quick answer: piles are caused mainly by constipation, straining, low fibre, long sitting and pregnancy — not by mangoes, cold floors or "heat in the body". Modern laser treatment is not the painful surgery people fear, and piles do not turn into cancer.

Myth vs fact

1. "Spicy food causes piles."

Fact: spicy food can worsen burning, but the main cause is constipation and straining. A low-fibre diet matters much more than chilli. ||

2. "Mangoes or 'garam' foods cause piles."

Fact: there is no evidence that mangoes cause piles. The idea of "body heat" is not how piles form. ||

3. "Sitting on a cold floor or stone causes piles."

Fact: it doesn't. Long sitting on any surface, especially the toilet, is the real concern. ||

4. "Only old people get piles."

Fact: piles are increasingly common in people in their 20s and 30s. See piles in young adults. ||

5. "Piles will turn into cancer."

Fact: piles do not become cancer. But bleeding should be checked because other conditions can bleed too. See blood in stool. ||

6. "Piles surgery is extremely painful."

Fact: that was true of old open surgery. Laser treatment causes mild discomfort and most patients go home the same day.

7. "Piles always come back after surgery."

Fact: with the right procedure and good bowel habits, most patients get lasting relief. ||

8. "A thread or 'dhaaga' tied at home is the cure."

Fact: tying threads or using unproven local methods can cause severe pain, infection and bleeding. Proper treatment is safer. ||

9. "If bleeding stops, the piles are cured."

Fact: bleeding often comes and goes. Piles may still be present and grow if the cause continues. ||

10. "Creams alone can cure all piles."

Fact: creams soothe symptoms of early piles but cannot shrink grade 3–4 piles. See can piles be cured without surgery. ||

The biggest harm from these myths is delay. Early piles are easy to treat; piles ignored for years get bigger and harder to manage.
