Laser Piles Surgery Recovery Time: A Day-by-Day Guide

By Dr. Bhupendraa PrrasadBombay Hospital, IndoreReviewed Sep 20263 min read

Most patients' biggest fear about piles treatment is the pain afterwards. With laser treatment, recovery is much gentler than traditional open surgery. Here is what the first days and weeks usually look like, so you know what to expect.

Quick answer: after laser piles surgery most patients go home the same day, have mild discomfort for a few days that is controlled with tablets, pass the first stool within 1–2 days, return to desk work in about 2–4 days, and resume normal activity within 1–2 weeks.

Day-by-day recovery

TimeWhat to expect
Day 0Procedure takes about 20–40 minutes under anaesthesia. Most go home the same evening.
Day 1–2Mild soreness and swelling. First stool is usually passed with a stool softener.
Day 3–5Discomfort reduces. Most desk workers return to work. Short walks are encouraged.
Week 1–2Light spotting with stool or mild discharge can occur and settles. Normal daily activity.
Week 3–6Treated piles shrink fully. Gym and heavy lifting usually allowed after review.

The first stool

Many patients delay the first stool out of fear. Don't. Holding back makes stool harder and more uncomfortable. Take the prescribed stool softener, drink plenty of water, and use a warm sitz bath afterwards — it relaxes the muscles and eases soreness.

Pain after laser treatment

Laser treatment shrinks the pile from within instead of cutting it out, so there is no large open wound. Most patients describe discomfort rather than pain, well controlled with regular tablets for a few days. Pain that suddenly increases, fever, heavy bleeding or inability to pass urine should be reported immediately.

Do's and don'ts

  • Do take a sitz bath 2–3 times a day and after stool.
  • Do eat soft, fibre-rich food — see diet after piles surgery.
  • Do walk around the house from day 1.
  • Don't strain or sit on the toilet for long.
  • Don't lift heavy weights for about 2 weeks.
  • Avoid long two-wheeler rides for the first week.
Recovery depends on the extent of disease. Large grade 4 piles or combined piles-fissure-fistula treatment may need a few extra days. Your surgeon will give you a personal timeline.

Will piles come back?

Results are lasting for most patients, but the tendency to form piles remains if constipation and straining continue. The diet and toilet habits you build during recovery are what protect you long-term. Compare approaches in laser vs open surgery and stapler vs laser.
