Piles, Fissure or Fistula? How to Tell the Difference
Piles, fissure and fistula all affect the same area and are easily confused — but they are different problems with different treatments. Telling them apart is the first step to the right cure.
The simple difference आसान अंतर
- Piles (bawaseer): swollen veins; the main symptom is painless bleeding, sometimes a lump.बवासीर: नसों में सूजन; अक्सर बिना दर्द के खून।
- Fissure (fissure/दरार): a small tear in the skin; the main symptom is sharp pain while passing stool.फिशर: दरार; मल त्याग के समय तेज़ दर्द।
- Fistula (bhagandar): a small abnormal tract; the main symptom is pus or discharge near the anus, often recurring.भगंदर: मवाद/रिसाव, बार-बार।
Quick guide: bleeding → think piles; pain on stool → think fissure; discharge/pus → think fistula. Only an examination confirms it.
Why correct diagnosis matters सही पहचान क्यों ज़रूरी
Because the treatments differ. Treating a fistula as if it were piles, for example, won't solve it — and a fistula usually needs a proper procedure to stop repeated infection. This is why self-diagnosis and over-the-counter creams often disappoint.
The good news अच्छी बात
All three are very treatable, and modern laser proctology makes treatment far more comfortable than most people expect — usually day-care, with quick recovery.

Frequently asked questions सवाल-जवाब
How do I know if I have piles or fissure?+
Painless bleeding usually points to piles; sharp pain while passing stool points to a fissure. An examination is needed to be sure.
Is fistula more serious than piles?+
A fistula won't heal on its own and tends to recur with infection, so it usually needs a proper procedure. Piles range from mild to severe.
Can these be treated by laser?+
Yes — piles, fissure and fistula can often be treated with laser methods that are nearly painless and usually day-care.
Can one person have piles and fissure together?+
Yes, it's fairly common to have more than one of these at the same time, which is another reason a proper examination matters.
